Jonesy's War

from by The Uncouth

Jonesy came home on a cloudy day
Eyes open and dead
A few new medals, a few new scars
And a timebomb in his head
His daughters made a banner
His wife held him and cried
Jonesy found no comfort
He was still at war inside

He was so young when he left
But all this misery and death
Has left him tired and bitter
With hatred on his breath
He stopped talking about the future
He stopped making family plans
Jonesy's body is at home
His mind's still in Afghanistan

Jonesy isn't home anymore
An empty bottle and a note left on the floor
He tried to self-medicate
Tried but he couldn't escape
Jonesy is a prisoner of war

The only time he felt at ease
Was with his fellow Marines
Trying so hard to drink it all away
All the feelings he'd suppressed
All the memories and stress
Jonesy knew he'd never be the same

They put Jonesy in his grave
On a cloudy April day
A heavy sadness in the springtime sky
A 21-gun salute
He was buried in his boots
The men all came to say one last goodbye
A heartfelt eulogy for his shattered family
His wife told him she loved him one last time
May he finally find release
May he finally rest in peace
Now that Jones has finally left the war behind
